Adoption is a beautiful thing because it provides childless families (or even those with children) a
chance to build or strengthen their bond. However, the whole process of adoption is not as easy as it seems. There
is an undeniable fact as regards parents who are interested in adopting a baby.
That fact is the cost of adoption. It is true that the costs are high when it comes to this but
they may differ depending on the type of adoption to be pursued.
In private domestic adoptions wherein prospective adoptive parents directly deal with a pregnant woman, the cost
of adoption would entail attorney’s fees because a lawyer would have to be hired to draft a contract with the
pregnant woman who is willing to put her child up for adoption. Also, a petition would have to be made in court in
most jurisdictions to fully effect adoption. A hidden adoption cost also would
have to be if the pregnant woman who is putting her child up for adoption asks for compensation herself. This can
add up to a high bill in the end.
In domestic adoptions with the help of adoption agencies, an application fee would have to be paid in order to
simply begin the process of adoption. This payment is quite costly in itself. Then there are forms to be filled and
a professional service fee would have to be paid to the adoption agency. The prices will differ, though, depending
on the nature of the adoption agency. If it is non-stock and non-profit, then the service fee would be much lower
as compared to a private adoption agency. Keep in mind that this method would also entail attorney’s fees and court
fees as a petition is required in most, if not all, jurisdictions. The cost of adoption in this method is
naturally much higher as compared to private domestic adoptions.
In international adoptions (wherein a child will be adopted by
prospective adoptive parents who are residents of a different country) with the aid of adoption agencies,
application fees and professional service fees are also included albeit much higher. In addition to that, most
prospective adoptive parents have to pay separate travel fees (airfare and accommodation) in order for the agency
to bring the child to their home country or in order for them to personally go the child’s home country. This can
go either way but nonetheless, the adoption costs here is much higher than domestic adoptions.
It is conceded that the costs are very high in wishing to build a family the alternative way, most adoptive
parents will attest to the fact that the cost of adoption is not too high, as compared to the positive
effect it will bring to a childless marriage, or to a single person who wishes to be a parent alone. It is
definitely worth the high costs.
