look into adopting older children. A child is considered “older” after they turn 3 years old. There are a lot of

perspective and become the parents you want to be by adopting older children.
The process of adoption has come a long way since the time when adopting a child seems somewhat a taboo. Parents
persist that they adopt a child who looks like them, and the child’s identity as an adopted child is kept secret
for a long time, sometimes, until the legal parents’ death. Today, the world is becoming more open to adoption, and
this a cause for great joy. However, while most aspiring parents search for the perfect baby to wean as their own
child, older kids are being left behind, left to grow in foster homes until they are old enough to go out on their
own without any familial and parental guidance. As part of our open-mindedness, we all should look into
adopting older children.
In any country in the world, it is a fact supported by statistics that older children do have a more difficult
time being chosen as potential adopted children. A child is considered “older” after they turn 3 years old. There
are a lot of reasons why some hopeful parents shy away from adopting older children. Older children, as compared to
younger ones, have developed their own personality, which can sometimes prove to a challenge especially when the
habits are ill-mannered. Because of their age, they also have a tendency to harbor deep psychological wounds. And
even if those wounds heal over time, the scars are still manifested in the way they behave and interact with other
people. Usually, counseling – especially with the adoptive parent – will help heal the wounds, but it can still be
a cost that parents would not want to add to their bills. Older children can also sometimes prove to become a
problem to some parents because they have a harder time warming up to their new environment, ranging from aloofness
and being antisocial to becoming violent, as if testing to see how far your patience can reach.
But of course, there is much more joy when it comes to being a parent to older children. Older parents,
especially, can benefit from older children because there is less age gap. Older parents have been through stages
of taking care of babies, from changing the diapers to burping them after feeding time, that an older child would
seem a little less trouble, with an added bonus that you can talk to the child without having to worry if he or she
understands you. Couples who both work outside the home can have a more convenient and enjoyable time with an older
child because they do not need to spend every waking hour to tend to them, unlike in younger children. Yes, older
children already have their personality developed, along with the baggage they brought with them from their
previous families, but this is what makes older children more precious: that their experience can make them into
stronger individuals and with the proper guidance, they can get past their history and become brilliant
individuals.
For all aspiring parents, you are encouraged to widen your perspective and become the parents you want to be by
adopting older children.
